Who are the Westies?

The Westies are also known as Lynne & Kevin Freels. The nickname "Westies" comes from the two dogs that they owned, the late See Threepio and the late Artoo Deetoo. Artoo and Threepio are purebred West Highland White Terriers, also known as "westies". The photo you see on the Real Westies page is of Artoo and Threepio. Take a good look, because that's what they looked like (when they're clean & trimmed). Otherwise, they looked like your kitchen mop 95% of the time.

It was only appropriate that Kevin & Lynne chose "westies" as their Internet handle, since the dogs have it easy; eat, sleep, poop...what more is there in life?

Sadly, Artoo is no longer with us, but Threepio is still giving us a run for our money. We got another female Westie, Sy Snootles. She is a handful and then some.

Lynne is originally from Toronto, Ontario . She grew up in Canada, living in the Toronto area until she moved down here in 1993. She is fiercely proud of her Canadian ancestry, so, of course, Kevin's favorite thing to do is pick on the Canadians (other than devote himself entirely to her). Likewise, Lynne is skeptical of Americans, so her favorite thing to do is pick on us Yankees.

Lynne's sister Cheryl and brother-in-law Kyle have two girls, Sarah Ashleigh and Cynthis Ainsley. Kevin has a feeling that both Sarah and Cindy will like their Aunt Lynne because Aunt Lynne likes to spoil little Sarah and Cindy! Lynne's mother, Aileen, lives with her sister and brother-in-law in Toronto.

Lynne's has a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from York University in Toronto. Currently, Lynne is just doing temp work for several agencies.

Lynne's favorite things to do are:

Kevin is from the San Francisco Bay Area originally, growing up in the East Bay. He moved to Reno, Nevada to attend the University of Nevada, Reno in 1980, and returned to the Bay Area in 1990.

He was a Systems Administrator for Vestek Systems in San Francisco, California, and before that, he worked for Century Analysis as a Product Management Analyst, then as a Network Administrator. He has been involved with computers (don't worry, it's platonic) since college, studying Computer Science. As his resumé shows, he has been a Systems Administrator for almost nine years. From February of 1997 until March of 2001, Kevin was a Systems Administrator for Walt Disney Feature Animation>. He now works for Wild Brain, a small animation company in San Francisco where he is the (only) Systems Administrator.

Kevin played drums in the Cadillac Potatos while he lived in the Bay Area, a small Rock'n'Roll group formed with several of his computer nerd friends. Even though he studied computers in college, he spent a lot of time in the University of Nevada,Reno's Music Department playing percussion in just about every band there is. He still is very active in the UNR Wolf Pack Alumni Band, a collection of all the people who attended the UNR Marching Band over the years.

He has two sisters, Sarah and Jessica, and one brother, Justin. Of all of Kevin's siblings, none are married and only Jessica has children, a boy named Jacob Reilly Barton. For a while, they were evenly distributed geographically around the world, but have since returned to live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kevin's mother passed away in 1996, but Kevin's father is married and lives in Fresno.

Lynne & Kevin live in Walnut Creek, California. They purchased a house there when they moved up from Los Angeles this year and sold their house in Burbank.

Lynne & Kevin met in 1993 on a Star Trek cruise. Uh-huh, a Star Trek cruise. It's a cruise like any normal (!) cruise except that there are stars from the Star Trek movies and series on the cruise with you. The two of them met at the singles dance on Sunday night at the beginning of the cruise and were engaged on Friday (yes, that's five days!). She moved down to California about one month later, and they were married about a month and a half after that. That was over two and a half years ago, and it's been great! Except for the fact that they were born 4 ½ years apart, they could be twins separated at birth. Obviously, they have a lot more in common than just Star Trek.

After much waiting and long months of frustration, Lynne and Kevin adopted a baby boy from Taiwan, Paden Allan Yin Freels. He arrived home on Valentine's Day. Their desire to have a Christmas present with diapers on it has now come true!
